Mississippi Burning

Today, Ms Huang finished showing a movie "Mississippi Burning". Personally, I don't really like the show as there are many sensitive issues of racism in the movie. I personally find some parts quite disturbing.
Basically, the story is revolves around the lynching of three civil rights workers. I have learnt alot about the history of racism in Mississippi and also about the Ku Klux Klan and all their evil deeds.
There were some disturbing scenes like the Negro FBI's interrogation on the Mayor.. I found it really disturbing as many disgusting scenes were described such as "cut his scrotum" and "dipped into a pool of blood bottom down." I was really scared of what the Negro man would do to the Mayor, luckily for me, the scene cut off at that point. But was re-enacted by showing the scene of the Mayor hanging from a rope. He probably felt guilty and killed himself.

Personally, I don't really like these kind of shows which shows racism because it gives a constant reminder to the past Singapore had to go through... whats more is that I'm half Japanese, and that peers would always make fun of me/disturb me when I was in primary school.

  1. If you say that the movie was disturbing because it gives a constant reminder to the past Singapore had to go through, that is not wrong. However, it is not correct either. We need to learn from the wrongdoings and faults of our ancestors, why and where did they did wrong so that we can improve and prevent a similar thing from happening. If everybody forgets our multi-racial objective, then soon, Singapore would have racist riots again and the whole of Singapore would land in chaos.

  2. I agree that some of the scenes were disturbing and i did not really like those scenes either. But i believe that some of these scenes were real like the lynching of the Blacks. Even though they were disturbing, they still reminded us of the discrimination that the Blacks faced at that time so that we would prevent such things from happening again.

  4. I agree with you as I personally do not like the movie much due to particular disturbing scenes. However, we must keep in mind that this is still happening in the world around us.

  5. But i think these disturbing scenes are actually what that can actually make us realize that racism should be prevented and how scary it can be. Without these, we cannot really feel what problems racism will cause and what kind of things will result; how many lives it takes. Only then can we truly feel how severe the problem of racism actually is.

  6. The show was a bit to disturbing for teenagers like us, I agree. But, this would make a bigger and deeper impact in our hearts about racism everywhere in the world. We also hope that these problems would not face us as it would not be nice fighting with other races as a multiracial country. Look at how many blacks and Jews had been killed just because of the reason of their races.

  7. I agree that it might be disturbing, but I guess incidents like this still happens(maybe not as bloody) in the world, so I guess it is better to get to know how racism can make people do extreme things and be aware before you (if you are unlucky) actually get caught in such a situation, like maybe the Geylang slashing incident.

  8. Although this movie was slightly disturbing, it had to use this effects to evoke our thoughts about the poor conduct of the Whites, and how they were wrong. It was also used to show that racism is wrong and to show this they must use disturbing scenes to catch our interest and let us now of what it truly is and how it really affects people.
